The Blandford Car Club will be launched on Tuesday 23 July by Chairman of North Dorset District Council, Cllr Su Hunt, at the council offices in Blandford.
The club has purchased a Kia Rio which club members will have access to for as short a time as one hour if needed with a minimum usage charge of just £3.40.
Community car clubs have been successful in many UK towns and provide a modern alternative to car ownership because the cars are shared between club members.
There is a nominal joining/membership fee and cars are charged on an hour-by-hour basis. All maintenance, insurance and fuel costs are included in the hourly/fuel rate.
Evidence from existing clubs suggests that members enjoy a significant saving in their annual motoring costs to the extent that some people give up their own car and rely solely on the car club for their motoring needs.
Community car clubs particularly suit people who have the occasional need of a car but don’t find it essential to have a car available to them all the time.
The purpose of the Blandford Car Club is to make modern, economic and clean cars available on demand to meet the mobility needs of the local community. Its vision is to implement a car club which will knit into the fabric of the town and the daily lives of residents.
The project is still in its early stages and aims to ensure that the cars, their locations and availability fulfil the needs of the community.
The Blandford Car Club initiative is supported by Sowing Seeds and North Dorset District Council.
