A30 essential road maintenance

Posted on 19 June 2013 by Dorset County Council

Essential road repairs and resurfacing work will soon be carried out on the A30 near Shaftesbury.

A30 road surface crackingDorset County Council engineers will carry out the maintenance in three sections between Thursday 27 June and Monday 22 July.

Due to the narrow width of the road and the large vehicles and equipment being used, the A30 will be closed between 9am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday where work is taking place but will be open as usual overnight and during the weekends.

Between Thursday 27 June and Wednesday 3 July, the A30 will be closed from the Fifehead Magdalen road down Stour Hill for around 1 mile. This section of road will be reconstructed as it has become deformed with the movement of the clay sub-soil.

Between Thursday 4 July and Friday 12 July, the A30 will be closed from the river bridge at the east end of West Stour to a point just past the Ship Inn. This section of the road is also being reconstructed as it is disintegrating in part, has poor skid resistance and the shape and level of road is being improved to help drainage.

Between Monday 15 July and Monday 22 July, the A30 will be closed from the bottom of Church Hill at Long Cross and continue west along Sherborne Causeway for around one mile. This section of road is being repaired due to pot-holes and cracking which would mean the road structure would not survive another extreme winter.

Andrew Martin, Dorset County Council head of highways operations said:

“Our road inspection team has found these sections of the A30 to be in an extremely poor condition and it’s essential that repair work is carried out to maintain the safety of the road.

“We know that the road closures will add journey time and cause delays but it is the safest way to carry out this reconstruction and resurfacing, which will ensure that residents and businesses still have a reliable road network.”

Diversions will be signposted for through traffic. For the first two phases of work drivers will be diverted along the A357 through Henstridge, Stalbridge and Shillingstone, then north onto the A350 from Durweston to Shaftesbury and back onto the A30.

During the closure at Long Cross, traffic will be signed to the Ivy Cross Roundabout, down Bleke Street and on to the B3081 to Gillingham. At Gillingham, traffic will be diverted onto the B3091 back down to East Stour.

I know we all hate being diverted etc when roadworks are in operation – but it is really good news to hear that these sections of the A30 are being repaired etc. It’s good that Dorset repair their roads and keep an eye on the potholes and safety of the roads.
