Volunteer drivers needed to join country car scheme

Posted on 12 December 2012 by Dorset County Council

An appeal has been made for volunteer drivers to assist local people to make essential journeys in the Sydling Saint Nicholas area.

Volunteer car schemeThe Sydling Saint Nicholas country car group is due to be re-launched in the new year and will serve the villages and surrounding areas of Sydling Saint Nicholas, Up Sydling, Frampton, Grimstone, Stratton, Bradford Peverell.

Country car schemes assist local people, mostly the elderly, who are not able to use or access public transport with journeys, such as visits to medical centres, dentists and to visit family and friends in hospital. Volunteer drivers are paid a mileage allowance and receive requests for transport from a local organiser.

Potential passengers contact the organiser and give details of the transport they need. The organiser then contacts the volunteer drivers to see if they are free to help and transport the passenger. Volunteer drivers use their own cars and receive expenses of 45p a mile.

Emma Spurgin, local organiser for Sydling St Nicholas at Dorset County Council, said:

“The country car scheme is a vital service for our community, and volunteer drivers are essential to make it work. It offers a lifeline for people in rural areas who are either not able to use public transport or have no other way of making essential trips. Volunteering can be extremely rewarding and anyone who comes forward will be providing a valuable service to the community.”
