Relief Road wins another construction award

Posted on 16 April 2012 by Dorset County Council

Contractors who built the Weymouth Relief Road are in the top 3% of projects in the Considerate Constructors Scheme 2012 National Awards. Skanska Construction UK Ltd won a silver award for its work as major contractor on the road. The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) is the national initiative set up by the construction industry to encourage best practice beyond statutory requirements. The site was particularly commended for the high standards reached in eight categories, including being a good neighbour and taking care of the environment.

CCS monitor Anthony Harris said: “The management team has implemented new initiatives to interact with the general public which has reduced dramatically Weymouth residents’ worries and fears.

“The team has been totally involved with the local community with numerous goodwill gestures. This is an excellent example of how to implement the CCS Code of Practice. It was a professionally managed project which has been a pleasure to monitor.”

Skanska’s win is also an achievement for Dorset County Council which commissioned the work.

Skanska project manager Willie McCormick said: “During the scheme construction we worked closely with the county council to ensure that residents and the community were kept up to date on the progress of the scheme by providing regular scheme web updates, press releases, newsletters and meetings with concerned residents. We are very proud that our continuous work to encourage best practice has been recognised.”

The council’s Cabinet portfolio holder for transport Cllr Peter Finney said: “This award shows how well the county council and Skanska engaged with the community throughout construction of the scheme and is a great achievement for the project. A huge amount of effort went into developing relationships with local stakeholders through consultation on the scheme. The relief road was the first county council project to have a blog; it was set up to help residents keep up to date with the latest developments.”
