Weymouth & Portland Live Thursday 26 July to Sunday 12 August
Weymouth Beach nestled at the heart of Dorset and East Devon’s magnificent Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site will be centre stage as the borough prepares to host a Live Site for the screening of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Weymouth & Portland Live, which will be free to enter, will be based centrally on Weymouth’s golden beach overlooking the spectacular bay where the Great Britain Sailing Team will compete against the world’s top sailors for Olympic honors.
Weymouth & Portland Live will predominantly focus on screening the London 2012 sailing events from 29 July to 11 August, typically from noon until 6pm each day. The site will also be used to screen other Olympic sporting competitions, especially in the evenings when some of the key athletic events will be held.
Weymouth Beach, with the backdrop to the picturesque Georgian seafront, bustling town centre and seventeenth century harbour, will become a wonderful amphitheatre to share and celebrate this unique Olympic spectacle.
Weymouth & Portland Live will have the capacity to entertain up to 15,000 visitors at any one time, broadcasting live BBC coverage of the 2012 Olympic Games on two giant screens (60sqm). The site will also be the focal point for the region’s cultural events as part of the “Maritime Mix London 2012 Cultural Olympiad by the Sea”.
Adjacent to the Live Site there will also be an interactive Sports Arena running from 27 July to 12 August, 10am until 6pm daily, offering an opportunity for up to 2,000 people per day to try out some of the country’s favorite sports including football, rugby, volleyball, cricket, bowling, sailing and kayaking. The Sports Arena will be co-ordinated by Dorset County Council (Sports Development), County Sports Partnership and Active Dorset with support from national governing sports bodies and over 400 sports volunteers.
