Dog warden service returns to council

Posted on 05 March 2012 by Purbeck District Council

Purbeck District Council has taken over the management of the district’s dog warden service.

This is an important milestone for the service in Purbeck, which returns to the council’s control after being run by a private company for many years.

Councillor Paul Johns, the council’s Built Environment Spokesperson said: “I would like to thank the previous contractor for providing the service in the past, but we are very pleased to re-launch this District Council-run service covering the whole of Purbeck.  We’re also taking this opportunity to remind people about responsible dog ownership”.

The main roles of the dog warden are to deal with stray dogs reported to the council and to promote responsible dog ownership which includes owners cleaning up after their dogs in designated areas and keeping their dogs under proper control.

Councillor Johns continued:  “Due to the size and rural nature of the Purbeck district, there is a great demand for the service, so it is essential that dogs are kept under proper control and for owners to clean up after their dogs. The vast majority of dog owners act responsibly but we ask everyone to please pick up their dog poo and control their dogs so that they are not a nuisance to others.”

In the last year in Purbeck, the dog warden service dealt with 51 complaints of fouling and a further 44 complaints of dogs not being kept under proper control; some of these cases have involved the police when a person has been bitten.  85 stray dogs were also dealt with.

Dog-related issues, including fouling, dog control or strays, can be reported either online at or by contacting the council on 01929 556561. Further information about the dog warden service in Purbeck is also available on line at
