Work will start to replace the 1960s Burton Road footbridge over the A35 Christchurch bypass on Monday 30 January.
The new, single-span bridge will be higher, safer and easier to use for disabled people.
In two weeks time, the road will be partly closed for several months to ensure the work can be carried out safely.
From 13 February, the A35 will be reduced to one lane between the Stony Lane and the Somerford roundabouts in both directions between 9am and 3pm Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings. This means it will be fully open at school drop-off and pick-up times when traffic is heaviest.
The same stretch will be closed completely for six nights later in the programme, when the new bridge and ramps are being lifted into position and the old bridge removed. Local people will be informed when the dates for this are known.
The footbridge has been weakened by being hit by high vehicles and its central support has been damaged by further impact. Its stepped ramps and headroom do not meet current accessibility criteria. Replacing the bridge and ramps will be cheaper than continuing to maintain them.
Dorset County Council’s contractor Raymond Brown has the contract, valued at just under £1million, which will be completed by mid-June.
Pedestrians will be able to use the existing bridge throughout the works, except on the nights when the new bridge is being installed and the old one removed.
