Wimborne is evolving!

Posted on 30 January 2012 by East Dorset District Council

Work on the much-anticipated Wimborne Square Enhancement Scheme is ahead of schedule and attracting a great deal of local interest.

To ensure this interest continues throughout the scheme, East Dorset District Council has launched a poster campaign to highlight what the completed Square will look like and to encourage shoppers to continue using the town during the improvements.

Council Leader, Councillor Spencer Flower; Lead Member for the Environment, Councillor Simon Tong and ward member forWimborne Minster, Councillor Robin Cook came together to launch the series of three posters.  Entitled ‘Wimborne is evolving’, ‘Wimborne is investing for tomorrow’ and ‘Wimborne is looking to the future’ they are being distributed to businesses in the town to display.  They are also available from the town’s Tourist Information Centre and Town Council office.

The £410,000 makeover of The Square started on 9 January and will be completed by the end of May, in time for the town’s popular Folk Festival which starts on 8 June.  The works will improve The Square’s appearance and make it more welcoming by creating a new, attractive pedestrian space where people can meet, sit and relax.

In order to minimise disruption to residents, traders and visitors to the town, the work is being carried out in nine different phases.  Although only ten days into the project, the mild weather has meant that the project is already ahead of schedule.

Councillor Flower said: “The posters provide very positive messages about the work that is being done to transform the centre of Wimborne.  Shops have to compete with on-line retailers and cut-price outlets, so if we are to attract shoppers and visitors to our towns we must provide them with reasons for visiting, such as the enhanced Square.

“However, it is important that whilst the works take place, people still see Wimborne as an attractive place to visit and shop.  The posters get the message across that it’s business as usual in the town and asks local residents to continue supporting local traders whilst this work takes place.  There has already been a great deal of interest in the scheme and I would encourage people to come along and view the improvements that are taking place for themselves.”
