Modern, stylish, sailing-inspired bus shelters are being installed on Weymouth seafront as part of the Weymouth Transport Package.
Seven old, brown shelters are being replaced at The King’s Statue bus stops as part of the £4.75m Weymouth Showcase element of the transport package.
Dorset County Council Cabinet member for transport Peter Finney said:
“Not only will the new shelters look attractive and fitting for the world class seaside resort that Weymouth is, but they will also bring the bus infrastructure into the 21st century with real time information displays.
“When passengers get to the bus stop they will be able to see exactly when the next bus is due, they will also be sheltered from the elements and they will be able to perch on a seat while waiting.”
Three shelters on the beach side of The Esplanade have been installed and the remaining four will be installed in July, after the bus stop improvement work on the shop side of The Esplanade has been completed.
The glass for the shelters will be fitted once the final surfacing of the road has been laid, and the real time information displays will be operational later this year.
In total, around 130 bus stops in the borough will be fitted with real time information displays.
As part of the Weymouth Showcase element, work has also started to install electronic car park guidance signs and variable message signs around the borough.
Five car park guidance signs are being installed to guide motorists to available spaces.
These will be on Granby Way, Swannery Bridge, King Street, A354 Weymouth Relief Road and on Commercial Road.
This will be complemented with real time signs at the relevant car parks: Swannery, Park Street, Melcombe Regis, Harbourside, the multi-storey and Cosens Quay.
The five variable message signs (VMS) will be used to advise motorists of events, delays and will display road safety information.
These will be on the A353 Preston Road, B3157 Chickerell Road, A354 relief road, A354 Weymouth Way and on the A354 on Boot Hill.

The new bus shelters are a vast improvement on the old ones! Regarding real-time bus passenger information, there are many stops in Weymouth that won’t be provided with information displays. Will real-time information be available from those stops via mobile-phone apps using Traveline? There are very few stops in Weymouth at present displaying the bus stop phone codes, unlike the Poole/Bournemouth area that show the phone codes at nearly all stops.

Weymouth bus shelters in the news, again.
According to a national newspaper and a TV station, Weymouth has been featured for its noisy bus shelters. These, we were told by DCC earlier this year, would bring the bus infrastructure into the 21st century with real time information displays.
Due to the noise from the cooling fans for these displays, embarrassed council officials have switched off the display screens in bus shelters in Weymouth.
Passengers waiting at them grumbled it was like listening to a jet engine taking off.
Didn’t they expect that electronics installed in a bus shelter warmed by the sun on our Esplanade would get over-heated?
