Thousands of people were recently in Wareham to see the local armed forces receive the Freedom of Purbeck and parade through the town centre.
Chairman of Purbeck District Council, Councillor Eric Osmond presented scrolls marking the Freedom to the Armour Centre of Bovington and Lulworth and to the Old Boys Association of the Junior Leaders’ Regiment of the Royal Armoured Corps.
The Light Cavalry Band led the parade of soldiers past and present, which made a tremendous spectacle, and armoured vehicles including the Panther, the Warthog, the Scimitar and the Warrior formed the rear of the procession.
Colonel David Swann MBE accepted a scroll on behalf of the Armour Centre and Major General Rutherford Jones CB accepted on behalf of the Old Boys Association.
Following the parade, the crowds joined the soldiers at the Recreation Ground where they enjoyed a huge variety of entertainment, including the Light Cavalry Band, fun fair, sheep shearing demonstrations, dancing, singing and crafts.
Councillor Osmond said: “This has been a fantastic day for the people of Purbeck. The district has such strong links with the local armed forces and I am delighted that we have been able to make those links even stronger today. In all my years here I’ve never seen such a spectacle in the town.”
