£2,777 raised by local people has been passed to local charities.
The money was raised at the Proms in Purbeck and the Freedom of the District Parade which recently took place in Wareham.
The money was split three ways and cheques were presented to The Army Benevolent Fund; Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen Families Association (SSAFA) and the Friends of Wareham Hospital.
Councillor Eric Osmond, Chairman of Purbeck District Council, said: “I am thrilled that people have supported these very worthy causes by dipping their hands in their pockets. These charities deserve our support and I am pleased that we have been able to help them.”
Lieutenant Colonel Richard East, Chair of The Army Benevolent Fund, Dorset and Major Michael Wilkinson, Divisional Secretary (Purbeck) for the SSAFA, received the cheques on behalf of their respective charities. Lieutenant Colonel East said: “There is a great demand for our services. Indeed, last year the Army Benevolent Fund raised £50,000 but gave out £75,000, so donations such as this are very much appreciated”.
Major Michael Wilkinson repeated this gratitude: “Every single person in the Armed Forces is eligible for support from the SSAFA and this money will go towards providing help, advice and practical support in the district.”
Colonel David Swann MBE, the Garrison Commander said: “I was delighted to witness the generosity of the people of Purbeck. All three charities will continue to be our focus for charitable activity throughout 2010 and it is hoped that more contributions will follow through the remainder of the year”.
