One Dorset youngster can be the toast of their fellow pupils by winning £200 for a children’s author to visit their school.
The New Horizons creative writing competition winner will also bag up an eBook reader for themselves – with prizes thanks to award sponsors MicroLibrarian Systems.
Entries should include an outline of the novel, including main characters and events, which is no more than 250 words, plus an opening chapter which should be between 500 – 1000 words.
The New Horizons Book Awards are run by the Schools Library Service and are open to Dorset children aged 9 – 13 years.
Manager Alison Burgess said: “This is a great chance to bag some money towards getting one of your favourite authors to visit your school.
“The story can be about anything you like, but has to be an original piece of work.
“Dorset is awash with talented youngsters so I’m sure that there’s plenty of budding authors out there – and who knows, we could have a potential J K Rowling, Jacqueline Wilson or Anthony Horowitz waiting to be discovered”
Entries should be emailed to schoollibraryservice@dorsetcc.gov.uk or sent to School Library Service, Education Resource Centre, Blandford Camp, Dorset, DT11 8DG.
Entrants should include their name, age, contact details and declaration that the story is their own work.
The closing date for entries is 10 September and the winner will be revealed at an awards ceremony later in the autumn.
